X video ads for AI startups
By Laza · October 16, 2026
A launch post on X gets one big moment. Video ads are how you keep the launch video working after that moment: in front of the people who engaged, the people who follow the accounts your buyers follow, and the people searching for your category.
This note covers what X itself says about video ads, and how we cut an AI launch video into ads. X’s help pages block automated checks, so the links below go to dated archive copies of X’s official pages; check the live pages before you build a campaign, because specs change.
The specs that matter
From X’s creative ad specs (archived September 27, 2026):
- Length: 15 seconds or less is recommended, and up to 2 minutes 20 seconds is supported. Select advertisers can request longer.
- Files: MP4 or MOV, up to 1 GB, with a strong recommendation to stay under 30 MB.
- Aspect ratios: 1:1, 1.91:1, 16:9 and 9:16, with 4:5 and 2:3 listed as newly added.
- Captions: closed captions or text overlays are strongly recommended.
- Looping: videos under 60 seconds loop.
The same page describes vertical video ads as a full screen, sound on unit with 9:16 recommended, and carousels of two to six swipeable images or videos.
What X says works
X’s creative best practices (archived September 29, 2026) give four video tips: keep videos under 15 seconds for higher completion rates, remember that pre roll viewers can skip after 6 seconds, add captions for sound off viewing, and show your branding within the first 3 seconds. The page also says the best performing ad copy is 50 to 100 characters, and that hashtags and multiple emojis are prohibited in ads.
That last point is easy to miss if you are reusing your launch post as an ad. Strip the hashtags first.
Formats worth using around a launch
- Video ads built from your hero cut, for reach and video views. X’s video views campaign page lists the view based bidding options and recommends using three or more formats.
- Vertical video ads for a sound on, full screen version.
- Carousels when you have several short clips, one per feature.
- Promoted only posts. X’s help center explains that promoted only posts are shown only to the people you target and do not appear in your followers’ timelines. That lets you test several cuts without flooding your profile.
Targeting for AI products
- Keywords. X’s keyword targeting reaches people based on keywords in their searches, recent posts and posts they engaged with. X recommends at least 25 relevant keywords. For an AI product, think in the words your buyer uses: the tools they use today, the job they want done, your category name.
- Follower look alikes. Follower look alike targeting reaches people with interests similar to an account’s followers, and X suggests around 30 handles per campaign. Pick the accounts your buyers actually follow: builders, researchers, newsletters in your niche.
- Retargeting. Post engager targeting lets you reach people who already engaged with your launch post.
- Measurement. X’s conversion tracking works through the X Pixel on your site or the Conversions API from your server. Install it before launch day, not after.
Keep the claims honest
X’s ad policy on deceptive and fraudulent content rules out misleading claims and non existent features. For AI products this is the trap: a sped up demo or a capability that is “coming soon” presented as live. If the cut is sped up, say so on screen. If a feature is not shipped, leave it out of the ad.
How we cut a launch video into ads
- Hook clips under 15 seconds. Take the strongest result moment from the hero video and open on it. No logo intro.
- One clip per use case. If the product does three jobs, make three clips, each for a different keyword set.
- A vertical version with captions that sit inside the safe area.
- Brand in the first 3 seconds, as X recommends, but as a small mark, not a sting.
- Copy under 100 characters, no hashtags.
We plan these cuts before the shoot, so the hero video contains the shots the ads will need. Our note on launch video length, format and specs for X covers the hero cut itself. Want the launch video and the ad cuts made together? Send us your brief.
